About
Cobalt is a leading medical charity founded in 1964,
helping in disease prevention, research, treatment and diagnosis.
Cobalt has been making a real difference to the quality of life and
the outcomes for those suffering from cancer and other
life-limiting conditions.
We
have been a major NHS partner in establishing the Cheltenham Cancer
Centre and other health care facilities, such as the new £5.1
million, all digital, Breast Clinic at Cobalt House. Our history
page tells more of the significant projects we have helped
with.
The Cobalt imaging centre is a part of our charity. We work to
provide cutting edge technology not available routinely within the
NHS or private sectors, to deliver high
quality diagnosis. These facilities enable the detection of
abnormalities within the body.
We are
dedicated to providing patients and other hospitals with better
access to diagnostic services such as MRI, PET-CT, CT and
Ultrasound. By continuing to improve efficiency, we help to
drive down prices too. Our unique diagnostic centre offers
MRI scanning, at a variety of magnetic strengths (measured in
teslas), on different magnets and fields. We currently
utilise the UK's first high field open MRI, a 3.0
tesla MRI, a 1.5 tesla MRI and Intera MRIs. We
also have Europes first 3.0 tesla mobile MRI and the world's first
with 'MultiTransmit' technology. Our scanners receive software and
hardware upgrades regularly to incorporate advancements in
technology.
Our centre also hosts our Open PET/CT Scanner, a world's first
design in Positron Emission Tomography scanning.
We undertake and fund research projects that bring tangible
benefits to patients suffering from cancer and other life-limiting
conditions, and we work closely with our NHS colleagues to bring
about improvements to the treatment of these illnesses.
Cobalt's Cancer Prevention Service helps to educate the public
by providing clear accurate messages to help people make informed
personal lifestyle choices.
We have also supported the NHS
breast cancer screening programme with equipment and a new breast
clinic for Gloucestershire.
We provide training and
education for healthcare professionals in radiology and
oncology.
