Local businessman Dave Burley has racked up over 500 miles fundraising for Cobalt. Dave started to support us in 1985 when he ran his first race to help fund a scanner because a friend’s son had leukemia and was being treated by Cobalt. He has raised thousands for local charities including Cobalt.
Dave has run 10 London Marathons, Bristol Marathon three times over as well as marathons in Malvern and Cheltenham.
Dave said “I remember my first race, I both ran and walked it. Friends, family and fellow traders have been amazingly generous over the years, regularly donating. Donations both great and small have spurred me on to complete these races that have challenged me both mentally and physically. I’ve entered the Cheltenham Half Marathon again this year and will be running for both Cobalt and Macmillan”.
As well as being a mature athlete, Dave runs a successful barbers shop business in Malvern which dates back to the 1920’s. Original features include an original art nouveau style room and the salon was last decorated in the 1960’s. The shop also has bespoke hairdressing chairs dating back to the early 1900s and an old fashioned cigarette vending machine. Dave’s inherited the business from his grandfather and it has been in the family for 99 years.
Kirsty Bradbury, Fundraising Engagement Officer said “Dave’s support has been phenomenal and just proves that every little helps as Dave has a committed group of supporters who sponsor him, often a fiver a time. It’s almost a ritual now that Dave runs a race and the pounds roll in. We are so grateful for his unwavering commitment to our cause”.
