Medical imaging charity Cobalt has just launched their 1.5 Tesla Sola System – the next generation virtually open MRI
They provided a dedicated high field open MRI scanner for patients with claustrophobia for more than 15 years. However the technology is now considered old and Cobalt felt it was important to continue to support their patients with an innovative new system. The new scanner has been specifically designed with a short wide bore, which is 36% larger than many ‘conventional’ scanners.
They will also be investing in the latest infotainment system call ‘Innovision’ which will be added to the scanner later in the year. This innovative technology is specially designed to alleviate anxiety. Patients will be immersed in a sound and video experience as soon as they lie on the bed. The system will provide patients with a focus and the display will keep patients informed about their remaining scan time and give clear instructions about moving the bed or holding their breath. The patient display makes the bore appear larger and virtually open preventing a claustrophobic feeling. The charity will be the first in the UK to use this new technology.
