Dementia Action Week is supported by medical charity Cobalt. This is a national event that calls for people across the UK to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
In the UK, there are about 800,000 people with dementia; it is estimated that around 400,000 people have dementia but do not know it. By raising awareness about this condition, it is hoped that more people will be diagnosed earlier.
Cobalt works with the NHS to support an early dementia diagnosis, using state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography/Computerised Tomography (PET/CT). Early diagnosis is essential, as many people with early stage dementia live full lives although adjustments may be taken to cope with symptoms.
The Charity also funds NHS dementia research nurses, with the aim of getting more patients into clinical trials to evaluate the very latest treatments for dementia. Cobalt also participates in many of these international clinical trials with PET/CT and MRI and carries out research into early dementia diagnosis.
