Cobalt Celebrates Volunteers’ Week

As part of national Volunteers Week 3-9 June Cobalt are celebrating their volunteers and saying thank you for all they do!

Volunteers play a vital part in the work of the charity’s fundraising team from making cards, helping at events, baking cakes, counting coins and being a welcoming face at our reception – the roles are varied and essential to the team. Volunteers have been helping the charity deliver its work for the last 6o years with the Cheltenham based charity having over 200 volunteers.

The charity, established by Dr Fred Hanna in 1964 was originally set up to enable people to receive their radiotherapy for cancer locally. Since then Cobalt has continued to grow and is now at the heart of delivering cutting edge imaging technology to people across the region and the UK . Recent projects include a partnership with the NHS supporting the new diagnostic centre at Gloucester Quays by providing a bespoke imaging centre with MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computerised Tomography) scanning, in addition to funding nurses for breast cancer research and support to teenagers and young people with cancer.

Today volunteers are at the heart of all that Cobalt does, with the charity recognising their immense contribution with a special awards ceremony in August. Cobalt is well known for its cards, a project which raises over £32,000 a year for the charity and is driven by a dedicated team of volunteers who collect, sort and upcycle used cards. To see what goes into upcycling then watch this video.

Cobalt’s Helen Tomes, explained: “We couldn’t provide the level of care without the loyal support and dedication from our amazing volunteers. Celebrating our volunteers should be all year round, not just a week. Their selfless commitment has been instrumental in helping us do more for the people across the 3 counties and beyond, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”
