A brief introduction to Cobalt
We believe everyone should have access to the best medical imaging for their diagnosis. We are a charity that invests in equipment, research and education to help this happen.
The Charity, was founded over 50 years ago by Dr Fred Hanna, who launched a public appeal to build a Cobalt Unit in Cheltenham, click here to read more about our history.
We support patients with cancer, dementia and other conditions. Our sophisticated and innovative scanning equipment uses the latest technology.
We contribute and provide funding for research, which leads to a greater understand of disease, predominantly cancer and dementia.
We provide training for healthcare professionals and education on cancer prevention and healthy lifestyles for the general public.
Cobalt supports the needs of patients locally and nationally through our specialist Imaging Centres in Cheltenham and Birmingham and through a fleet of mobile MRI scanners.
We now primarily focus on medical diagnostic imaging, believing that all patients should have access to the very best equipment, helping doctors to make a clear diagnosis and an appropriate personalised treatment plan.
Our unique scanning centre in Cheltenham stays at the forefront of diagnostic imaging technology. We see over 65,000 patients a year both at the Imaging Centre in Cheltenham, at our Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) Imaging Centre in Birmingham and with our mobile MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanners that travel nationally including the three counties (Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire).
In 2015 HRH The Princess Royal visited us to officially launch the new PET/CT scanner. Her Royal Highness took the time to talk to some Cobalt patients who received their diagnosis and treatment plans following scans using the state of the art equipment.
This year we launched the ITM Imaging Centre in Birmingham, which provides a vital research service for the Institute of Translational Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Our research and experience
We undertake and fund research projects that bring tangible benefits to patients affected by cancer and dementia.
We widely share our experience and research work on an international and national basis with doctors and healthcare professionals. We do this by offering sought after educational conferences and a large programme of evening education events. We have a specialist team who visit local schools and organisations delivering free health education talks.
